Smart Cities Connect, Smart Cities Connect Foundation, and US Ignite are once again recognizing some of the most innovative and influential smart cities projects around the world. This year the Smart 50 Awards program honors exceptional work in the categories of community engagement, digital transformation, smart mobility, urban infrastructure, and urban operations.
We are also happy to announce that several communities in the US Ignite Smart Gigabit Communities (SGC) network are among the Smart 50 award winners. These include: Austin, Chattanooga, Cleveland, Kansas City, Lafayette in Louisiana, Las Vegas, Park City in Utah, Richardson in Texas, San Diego, and Washington, D.C.

Water-Centric Citizen Engagement – Lafayette, Louisiana
Description: Lafayette is deploying a more comprehensive system of water sensors and stream sensors with computer vision cameras to sense rising water levels and standing water to induce quicker disaster response time to improve public safety and community resilience. This effort combined with more public awareness and accountability will improve resilience and disaster preparedness.

Description: The Washington, D.C. Department of For-Hire Vehicles (DFHV) is distinguishing itself as the first department of its kind to open its APIs to app developers; a move that has allowed them to offer faster, safer and more innovative taxicab, limo, and rideshare options for citizens and tourists in our nation’s capital.
DALI: A Smart, Collaborative Traffic Signal Timing System for Alleviating Urban Traffic Congestion – Richardson, Texas
Description: The DALI project aims to equip intersection controllers with smart software agents which collaboratively adapt signal timings by considering the feedback of all intersections affected by a change. An agent is an autonomous, smart software component that can communicate and collaborate with other agents to achieve a goal.
