Henry Chu, PhD., PE.

Dr. Henry Chu is the Executive Director of the Informatics Research Institute and a Professor of Computer Science/Computer Engineering at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. He has been with the University since 1988. His research interests are in machine vision and machine learning. His recent research includes learning from noisy data, time series prediction, and formation representation in deep learning networks. At the Informatics Research Institute, he oversees use-inspired artificial intelligence research in health informatics, disaster recovery and emergency management, and critical infrastructure cybersecurity. 

Dr. Chu leads and conducts research in machine learning and data science. His recent research has investigated problems related to collating and analyzing data from various sources to address societal issues such as improving health system performance and disaster recovery planning. He leads a project that supports the data analytics and management needs of the Louisiana Department of Health.

Dr. Chu was recognized for service work by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette chapter of the Phi Kappa Phi honor society in 2006 and 2008. The Louisiana Board of Regents recognized him for service to the Speaking of Science Program in January 2003. He received the Distinguished Professor Award from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Foundation in May 2000. He is a member of the honor societies of Eta Kappa Nu (electrical engineering), Tau Beta Pi (all engineering), and Phi Kappa Phi (all disciplines)

Dr. Chu is a Life Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and a Professional Member of the Association for Computing Machinery. He serves on the Data Committee of the State of Louisiana’s Taking Aim at Cancer in Louisiana initiative (2018-present) and the Allocation Committee of the Louisiana Optical Network Initiative (2013-present). He chairs the Louisiana EPSCoR Committee.

He has reviewed the Board of Regents’ Supervised Undergraduate Research Experience Program since 2013. Previously, he was a member of the Board of Regents Master Plan Research Advisory Committee’s Digital Media and Enterprise Software Task Force.

Dr. Chu is a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Louisiana. He is a member of the Phi Kappa Phi honor society (all disciplines), Tau Beta Pi (engineering), and Eta Kappa Nu (electrical engineering). He is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and a professional Association for Computing Machinery member.

Education: He received B.S.E. and M.S.E. degrees from the University of Michigan and his Ph.D. from Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind. He received his B.S.E. and M.S.E. degrees from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and his Ph.D. from Purdue University, all in electrical and computer engineering.
